CSR Leadership Helps You Stand Out from Green Me-Toos

Leadership has been defined as “an act or instance of leading; guidance; or direction” (from Dictionary.com).  To be an accomplished leader, one must utilize those characteristics while gathering followers to achieve a common goal or task.

Rahul Mitra made a great point in a recent CSRwire blog post, stating that “. . . the available CSR [literature has little] to say on leadership, compared to stakeholders, the ‘business case’ or even global/local adaptation.”  CSR leadership can come from many different places and benefit companies and society, while forming engaging dialogue between multiple stakeholders. It’s also become almost necessary to stand out from all of the others who have jumped on the green band wagon. Read the rest of this entry »

Do CEOs Think Sustainability is Important?

A recent report by Accenture and the U.N. Global Compact surveyed more than 750 CEOs asking them to what extent companies are embracing green issues and preparing for a future where sustainability is central to business.

According to the report, in the face of rising competition, technological change, and economic depression, corporate commitment to principles of sustainability remains strong. Roughly 93 percent of CEOs now see sustainability as important to their company’s future success. This is a drastic improvement from 3 years ago, when a previous study was released, and sustainability was just emerging on the edge of issues for businesses to address. Now almost three quarters of CEO’s agreed that “strengthening brand trust and reputation is the strongest motivator for taking action on sustainability issues”. Read the rest of this entry »

Benefit Corporation Bill

SDialogue is a member of B Lab and supports its movement to bring the ‘Benefit Corporation Bill’ to fruition in New York State.  The Benefit Corporation Bill would enforce the creation of a new corporate entity offering entrepreneurs and investors the option to build and invest in businesses that meet higher standards of purpose, accountability and transparency.

Please Urge NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (518-455-3791) to get Benefit Corp law to the floor for a vote today! http://bit.ly/c5et0Q

The legislative session is going to end shortly and he doesn’t want to put any more bills on the floor. URGE HIM TO HAVE ANOTHER MEETING OF THE CORPORATION COMMITTEE for the Benefit Corporation Legislation: A11498, same as S7855. AND TO GET IT TO THE FLOOR, SO THE ASSEMBLY CAN VOTE ON IT.

Please spread the word by educating all you know about this bill and its importance.

Without increasing regulation or impacting the state budget, legislation creating a ‘Benefit Corporation’ would (among many things) remove legal impediments preventing businesses or investors from using sustainability and social innovation as a competitive advantage; while legitimizes and enforcing the development of a new economy in NY which would recognize businesses that adopt higher standards of corporate purpose, accountability, and transparency.

Thanks!

We’ve made video chapters available from last week’s webinar, Top 3 Sustainability Communications Practices, at our YouTube channel. The webinar covered stakeholder engagement, sustainability/CSR reporting and sustainability branding.

Professionals from CSR/sustainability, marketing, communications, HR, EHS and other functions were in attendance at the webinar, and it was very well received. We also received a number of great questions at the end, for which we did not include video coverage.

Obama on Wall St. Reform: a Video Summary

In his 26-minute speech on financial reform in New York yesterday, President Obama clearly and compellingly laid out his administration’s current thinking on this critical legislation. We’ve done a video summary of his key points here, in under nine minutes, with a personal touch based on our attendance at the speech — don’t miss the interesting twist President Obama throws in at the end based on a Time magazine quote!

Perry attended President Obama’s speech compliments of and as a member of B Lab (organization that certifies B Corporations) and the American Sustainable Business Council.  Thank you! Thanks also to Scott Colesanti, a Hofstra Law Professor and Mandy Geisler, Programs Director at Healthy Child Healthy World for participating in the video.
