Do CEOs Think Sustainability is Important?

A recent report by Accenture and the U.N. Global Compact surveyed more than 750 CEOs asking them to what extent companies are embracing green issues and preparing for a future where sustainability is central to business.

According to the report, in the face of rising competition, technological change, and economic depression, corporate commitment to principles of sustainability remains strong. Roughly 93 percent of CEOs now see sustainability as important to their company’s future success. This is a drastic improvement from 3 years ago, when a previous study was released, and sustainability was just emerging on the edge of issues for businesses to address. Now almost three quarters of CEO’s agreed that “strengthening brand trust and reputation is the strongest motivator for taking action on sustainability issues”. Read the rest of this entry »

Greenest Building in America?

Omega Center for Sustainable Living

Every six months or so SDialogue comes together for a retreat where we can brainstorm our efforts for the next six months. On June 18th, 2010 we met up at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY to discuss our plans for the second half of 2010. It was a wonderful experience and a first time visit for both Beth Bengtson and me, our new intern! The Omega Institute is a 195 acre campus that promotes holistic living through workshops, conferences, and retreats.

During our time at Omega we were able to visit the Omega Center for Sustainable Living (OCSL) which won the 2007 “On the Boards” award for the ‘Best Green Design in America.’ It is expected to be certified Leed Platinum, and is on track to become the first building in America to meet all six requirements for the “Living Building Challenge”.

Benefit Corporation Bill

SDialogue is a member of B Lab and supports its movement to bring the ‘Benefit Corporation Bill’ to fruition in New York State.  The Benefit Corporation Bill would enforce the creation of a new corporate entity offering entrepreneurs and investors the option to build and invest in businesses that meet higher standards of purpose, accountability and transparency.

Please Urge NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (518-455-3791) to get Benefit Corp law to the floor for a vote today! http://bit.ly/c5et0Q

The legislative session is going to end shortly and he doesn’t want to put any more bills on the floor. URGE HIM TO HAVE ANOTHER MEETING OF THE CORPORATION COMMITTEE for the Benefit Corporation Legislation: A11498, same as S7855. AND TO GET IT TO THE FLOOR, SO THE ASSEMBLY CAN VOTE ON IT.

Please spread the word by educating all you know about this bill and its importance.

Without increasing regulation or impacting the state budget, legislation creating a ‘Benefit Corporation’ would (among many things) remove legal impediments preventing businesses or investors from using sustainability and social innovation as a competitive advantage; while legitimizes and enforcing the development of a new economy in NY which would recognize businesses that adopt higher standards of corporate purpose, accountability, and transparency.

Thanks!

Sustainable Brands ‘10 in Monterey, CA

Beth and I were at Sustainable Brands ‘10 last week in Monterey and had a great time. I presented CSR’s Seven Best Practices on Tuesday and Beth was video-interviewed by Justmeans that day as well about how to integrate sustainability into organizations’ brands and conversations (video below).

Some of  the key concepts taken from the Sustainable Brands conference were:

  1. Developed and developing countries are more in tune to the importance of the environment’s health than the US. From Cohn & Wolfe’s ‘image power green brands survey’: 79% of Americans are more concern with the economy than the environment while in countries like Brazil and India 55 – 70% picked the environment first.
  2. Consumers consider sustainable brands within three categories; “in me” (things we eat or drink, Brita water filters fall into this category), “on me” (personal care products like Burt’s Bees), or “around me” (household productions such as Clorox Green Works).
  3. Companies can encourage sustainable consumer consumption by ‘editing’ their choices by removing unsustainable products all together.

See #sb10 on Twitter and Andrew Winston’s blog post for additional coverage.

The variety and depth of SB ’10’s topics mirrored the variety and depth of ocean life at the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, where SB ‘10 held its gala event also on Tuesday night.  What an amazing backdrop for a party. With the lights low and the facility dotted with candle-lite tables, good food and drink, we were mesmerized by the displays of ocean creatures of so many varities.

Being on East Coast time, it wasn’t difficult for me to get up before the day’s events for a run a couple of the days we were there. I enjoyed Monterey’s beautiful scenery, including the dozens of seals on the rocks and beach.

And, oh yeah, we met lot’s of amazing people — some old friends and some new from organizations of all sizes from LivingHomes to Dow Chemical.

Recycling a Mountain Bike into a Commuter Bike

By Beth Bengtson

As the weather has improved, so has my want to be outdoors.  Hence the “new” commuter bike as a part of my life. Commuter Bike 2

Can’t begin to tell you the pleasure I get showing up at my appointments, meetings, and shopping with helmet in hand plus my legs have not been in better shape.  I will admit the one downside to commuting everywhere via bike is that it has increased my weekly laundry but still less than a gallon of gas.  If you have been thinking about using your bike more – do it as the mental benefits are huge when you come home and pass your dusty car.

Again it all ties back to personal benefit, health and sustainability – all three are linked in my increased bike usage.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
